My good dog Bobby reminded me this morning it’s National Dog Day. And since he’s the Dog-in-Residence here at the Rough Draft Cabin, he interprets that to mean it’s His Day. I’m good with that. I’m also okay that he’s now decided to flop one ear. He’s still ruggedly handsome.
Bobby loves plain, unsweetened yogurt. So I gave him a fat helping. He also loves apples, but only the organic variety. I’ve got some of those and we’ll share one later.
He also is crazy for chicken jerky. So I opened the bag and got out a couple and cut them up into little bite-size pieces and dropped them into a zip-lock bag. Every time he looks at me today, I’ll give him a treat.
I’ve been teaching him to say, “I love you.” I say it to him a lot, so I thought he could say it to me now and then. He’s working on it. Kind of garbled just yet (see Bobby’s movie below). But he’ll get there. He’s smart. And he does love me. So, we’ll get it worked out in time. In the interim, it’s fun to watch him try. Even if I sound a little goofy prompting him.
For all of us who love our dogs as much as they love us, garbled or not, that I-love-you phrase, those are words we can all practice more. Doesn’t have to be a “national” anything day. Who knows, we might get it right. And that day would be a mighty special day.
